Reading for Change book club
The Reading for Change Book Discussion Group will explore Race and Ethnicity, Equity and Inclusion (REEI). Through group discussion, we will expand our knowledge of systemic racism and intersectional social justice issues, examining how we uphold these systems of inequality, and identify steps we can take to combat inequalities. We hope to provide an inclusive space to explore meaningful change. This group will spend two or three months discussing one title so that we have time to unpack the topics in the book and look for ways we can impact change in the community. This book group will meet the last Wednesday of the month at 1:00.
In October, we will be discussing Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult
Ruth hesitates before performing CPR and, as a result, is charged with a serious crime. Kennedy McQuarrie, a white public defender, takes her case but gives unexpected advice: Kennedy insists that mentioning race in the courtroom is not a winning strategy. Conflicted by Kennedy’s counsel, Ruth tries to keep life as normal as possible for her family—especially her teenage son—as the case becomes a media sensation. As the trial moves forward, Ruth and Kennedy must gain each other’s trust, and come to see that what they’ve been taught their whole lives about others—and themselves—might be wrong.
